Keep the morning for Main Beach and head south for an afternoon that carries on after sunset. SWELL Sculpture Festival runs from 11 to 20 September 2026, with free outdoor sculpture viewing at Currumbin. Selected works light up from 5 to 9 pm, giving you a reason to linger after a first look in daylight.
From The Crest, this is a separate outing to Currumbin, so organise the journey before filling the afternoon. The useful choice is whether you want a daytime visit or an evening one: the festival’s free shuttle finishes before the illuminated sculptures come on.
Arrive while you can still see the details
The 2026 exhibition brings more than 100 artworks to the coast between Currumbin Beach and Flat Rock, Tugun. Arriving in daylight gives you time to find your way along the exhibition before deciding where to spend the evening.
Ask which works will be lit, then choose a few to revisit after five. Seeing the same sculpture in daylight and under its evening lighting gives you something to compare on the return walk.
Start with the festival maps and decide how far your group wants to wander. The exhibition extends along the coast; there is no need to reach every work to have a worthwhile visit. Leave enough energy for getting back to your transport as well as looking around.
Five o’clock changes the plan
SWELL’s visitor FAQs distinguish the outdoor exhibition, which is open all hours, from its staffed Information Hubs, open 8 am–5 pm. Pick up a programme or ask about the evening display before the hubs close. The lighting applies to a selection of sculptures, so do not expect every artwork or the whole walking route to be illuminated.
Sort the return before heading south
For a visit that ends in daylight, the organiser offers a free park-and-ride from Currumbin RSL. Its transport page gives the last return departure as 4.45 pm, from the stop outside Wallace Nicoll Park on Pacific Parade.
That timing rules out using the shuttle home after the evening lights. If you plan to stay, arrange another return option. Check the whole trip from Main Beach, including connections and the service home, before deciding to leave the car at The Crest. Avoid treating a tram journey south as the complete route to Currumbin.
Take a light layer for the later part of the visit and keep dinner flexible. A meal break can sit between your daylight walk and the illuminated display, provided you allow time to return to the works you want to see.
A Main Beach morning either side
The Crest puts Tedder Avenue’s cafés about two minutes away on foot. You can have coffee close to the apartment before the trip, or save that walk for the following morning. The full kitchen also makes an early dinner before departure an option if your main interest is the evening exhibition.
