Stay for the light: a SWELL 2027 evening from The Crest

Daylight and evening lighting gave SWELL two different moods in 2026. From Main Beach, plan the journey home first if you hope to stay after sunset at the next exhibition.

Decide how you are getting home before deciding to stay for the lights. That was the useful lesson of an evening visit to SWELL in 2026: the sculpture lighting and the final park-and-ride return did not run to the same clock.

An afternoon could still become a good evening. Seeing a work in daylight, then returning after the lighting came on, gave you two versions to compare. You just needed a plan that covered both parts of the visit.

The small timing detail that mattered

At the completed 2026 festival, selected sculptures were illuminated between 5 and 9 pm. The outdoor exhibition could be visited at other hours, but staffed Information Hubs operated from 8 am until 5 pm, according to the festival FAQs for that edition.

The last park-and-ride departure back to Currumbin RSL was listed at 4.45 pm. Anyone using that service would have been on the way home before the evening display began. To stay later, visitors needed another return arrangement.

That old timetable is finished. For the next exhibition, check the new getting-here advice for transport and the lighting programme before committing to an evening. Do not assume the same hours or service will operate again.

Use the afternoon to find your favourites

A daylight arrival gives you time to get your bearings and notice which works you would like to revisit. You can see more of their material and surroundings before choosing where to spend the later part of the outing.

The 2026 exhibition stretched along the coast from Currumbin towards Flat Rock, Tugun. It has now ended, having run 11 to 20 September. A manageable section and a few return stops made more sense than trying to cover everything twice.

Only some artworks had lighting. That distinction matters if you are taking children, walking with someone who tires easily or planning around mobility needs. Review the next layout and access information for the actual route, including the distance back to your transport.

SWELL’s 2027 announcement confirms 10 to 19 September at Currumbin Beach. The organiser has not yet released the 2027 lighting details. Keep those dates in mind, then choose a night once the organisers explain what will be lit and how visitors can get there and back.

Eat before you go, or leave dinner flexible

The Crest makes an early meal easy. Cook in the apartment kitchen before heading south, or walk the two minutes to Tedder Avenue if you would rather someone else handled it. A late return then has one less job attached to it.

Main Beach station is 300 metres from the building, but reaching Currumbin requires more than the local tram ride. Work out the onward connections, or the driving and parking plan, for the whole group. The Crest provides a complimentary undercover space per apartment for the part of the trip based here.

If you stay for a longer weekend, the morning afterwards can be a swim in one of the two heated pools and breakfast close to home. There is no need to give the whole stay an evening timetable.

Look through The Crest’s apartments when you have chosen your exhibition day. Bring a light layer, leave yourself time to get around, and make the journey back as deliberate as the visit itself.
